Woodland lies right out my back door. I live in one of the “river houses” along Brandywine Creek in Wilmington, Delaware. Brandywine Park, adjacent to my backyard, stretches a mile along the creek, beginning at a wooden suspended bridge to the northwest, and ending at the rapids near the Market Street bridge. In that mile of state-managed woodland I wander all year long, preferably early in the morning. The shots above illustrate my meanderings. I wanted to document the transition between winter and spring in my neck of the woods.
It seems most of the woodland photographers on the internet are British. If you like photographing landscapes, you might want to explore the work of two of my favorite Brits, Simon Booth, who specializes in woodland closeups, which he calls “intimate landscape,” and Simon Baxter, who excels in scenes of gnarled ancient oaks. You may detect the influence of each in my own work.
