As my wife and I searched for short stories to read out loud together we found a book in our home library edited by Carl Carmer and published in 1956, entitled the Cavalcade of America. It contains a collection of short biographical stories about leading men and women in U.S. history. The stories are based on radio broadcasts that began in 1935 and formed a collection called the Cavalcade of America. They provide excellent material for reading aloud.
I plan to share a number those readings because I find many relevant to current events. A case in point is the story of Thomas Paine, “the champion of common sense.” Carmer lists his story under the chapter called “The Champions of Human Rights.” Click on the podcast arrow above to listen to it.
Postscript:
I was a WWII baby, born in ’45 before the advent of television. In my toddler years I would listen to radio dramas, not the Cavalcade of America, because I didn’t know of that back then. But here are my favorite radio shows that I would listen to at bedtime: The Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, and The Shadow Knows. You can listen to them on YouTube.
