For an old guy, you have created a great post, Tom. It celebrates the art of the photographic essay as a reflection of grace, serenity and beauty that was the stock and trade of the great photojournalists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Irving Penn, luminaries we admired in our youthful days, a rare achievement in this age of sensational imagery.

Thank you, Stewart. Henri Cartier-Bresson is my chief photographic mentor. I know a little about Robert Frank and nothing at all about Irving Penn. I'll research those two. Thanks for your kind comment!

Happy Birthday Tom!!

I loved reading about the travels you and Alice shared together and your photos bring back so many wonderful memories of Midtown Brandywine neighborhood. I loved that neighborhood, and our friendship with you and Alice is at the top of the list for reasons why.

Tom, I was astounded at all you have done and the places y’all visited. You didn’t miss much ! We will miss Alice and red wine with chocolate…You two made Wilmington a great adventure which Suze and I will cherish always. Keep shooting those pictures and sharing what you are seeing and sensing through those lenses!

Much love and appreciation to you…. and Alice

Celebrating your birthday without Alice must have been so hard, but what a life you two had together! Jeff and I are glad that you and Alice landed back in Wilmington all those years ago. You challenged me theologically, and Alice was a wonderful mentor in creation care and other justice issues. Your photos are so beautiful--what an artist's eye.

Thank you for your reflections - in mind and by camera - and for reminding me that our time with people we love is a journey, because it matters.

Abundant blessings on your natal feast day, good sir. I'm sure there is an Alice-shaped hole in your heart. May it fill with the wonderful memories of all of your travels and laughter and love.

Happy Birthday Tom. I love hearing about your travels and loved witnessing your deep connection to Alice and vice versa. Thank you for your photos, which always take my breath away, as I also enjoy my home so near to those same waters. Sending love as I honor the sadness and joy of it all. A big wave to Alice, whose spirit I envision in the beauty of our beloved park. Ellyn

A beautiful, moving piece with beautiful photos of familiar sights, and a wonderful shot of you and Alice. The list of places you’ve seen - my, what travelers you two were! I remember you talking about a few of these trips but goodness, there are so many more. I can only imagine the fun you shared with each other on each trip, and the way certain moments in each would resurface over the kitchen table or find their way into jokes or insights many years later. Raising a glass to Alice for your birthday.

Happy 81st, TC! Because of circumstances beyond our control, we didn't spend much time together after your grandfather (my father) divorced my mother. So it was a touching and exciting thing to read the places you and Alice were able to visit together. I thought I was a world traveler, but my journeys almost pale in comparison. I only know that being able to experience other cultures and locations makes such a difference in our perspective on life, and I wish more people could do what we have done. So I join you in the gratitude for our adventures, and will join you next week in the 80s.
