At 11:00 a.m. today a diverse crowd gathered in Rodney Square for a rally convened by the Poor People's Campaign, launched by the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a staff retreat of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1968. The Poor People's Campaign website states (in principles one and two) "We are rooted in a moral analysis based on our deepest religious and constitutional values that demand justice for all. Moral revival is necessary to save the heart and soul of our democracy." And secondly, "We are committed to lifting up and deepening the leadership of those most affected by systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, and ecological devastation, and to building unity across lines of division."
Those two commitments, now focused on specific causes, were evident in signs of the times carried by rally attenders. See examples below. Also evident in those photos is the diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, and class of this growing progressive movement.
The MAGA movement claims to hold the moral high ground in the U.S. today. The Poor People's Campaign disputes that claim, inspired by prophets of old. So, now the stage is set not just for culture wars, but for a spiritual struggle that will try the souls of all.
Dear subscribers: Resisting tyranny at the state level will be most effective in the coming months. I, along with several other Delaware Substack writers, are organizing a Delaware Free Press. Please share this post with friends and urge them to subscribe for free. Together we will create a local space for ferreting out facts and arguing non-violently.
Thanks,
